Horse Bits — Finding the Right Mouthpiece

Choosing the right horse bit is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your horse's comfort and your riding effectiveness. A bit that's too harsh creates tension and resistance. One that's too mild may not give you enough control when you need it. Solo Saddlers stocks over 75 different horse bits — from simple loose-ring snaffles to specialised gag bits, pelhams, and curb bits — because we know that every horse's mouth is different.

Types of Horse Bits

Snaffle bits — The most widely used family of bits. Loose-ring, eggbutt, D-ring, and full-cheek snaffles each offer slightly different stability and action. Single-jointed, double-jointed (French link), and straight bar mouthpieces all feel different to the horse. If you're unsure where to start, a double-jointed eggbutt snaffle is a solid all-rounder.

Pelham bits — A pelham combines curb and snaffle action in a single mouthpiece, used with two reins or pelham roundings. Popular in showjumping and polo, they offer more braking power without moving to a full double bridle setup.

Kimblewick bits — Sometimes called a Kimberwick, this is a simplified curb bit with a single rein. It provides mild poll pressure and curb action, making it a good step up from a snaffle for strong horses that need a little more respect for the aids.

Gag bits — Used extensively in showjumping, polo, and with strong horses on trails. The gag action lifts the horse's head and provides significant braking. Available in various styles including the Dutch gag (bubble bit), American gag, and classic rope gag.

Curb bits — The leveraged bit used in double bridles and Western riding. Curb bits apply pressure to the chin groove, poll, and bars of the mouth. They require educated hands and are typically used by experienced riders.

How to Choose the Right Bit

Start by measuring your horse's mouth width — bits are sized in centimetres or inches, and a bit that's too wide or too narrow causes discomfort. Next, consider your horse's tongue thickness and palate shape. Horses with thick tongues often prefer double-jointed or ported bits that give the tongue more room.

Think about what you need from the bit. Is your horse pulling through the bridle? You might need something with more leverage. Is your horse backing off the contact? A softer mouthpiece or a bit with less action could help. Our team has ridden in everything from snaffles to gags across endurance, jumping, and racing — we can help you narrow it down.

Bit Materials

Stainless steel is the standard — durable, easy to clean, and taste-neutral. Sweet iron and copper bits encourage salivation and a softer mouth. Rubber and happy-mouth bits are gentler options for sensitive horses or young horses being started.
