Racing and Work Saddles — Built for the Track

Racing and work saddles serve the most demanding end of the equestrian industry. A racing saddle needs to be as light as possible while keeping the jockey secure at speed. A work saddle (exercise saddle) needs to survive daily trackwork with multiple horses — heat, sweat, and relentless use. Solo Saddlers supplies both to racing yards and trainers across South Africa, with products that understand the realities of track life.

Racing Saddles

A racing saddle weighs as little as 200-500 grams. Every gram counts when you're managing riding weights, and the difference between winning and losing can come down to the jockey's equipment allowance. Racing saddles are minimalist by design — a lightweight tree (or treeless construction), thin flaps, and minimal padding. They're designed for one purpose: staying on a horse's back at gallop while interfering as little as possible with the horse's movement.

We stock racing saddles in various weights to suit different race conditions and jockey weight requirements. Flat racing saddles are the lightest. Hurdle and steeplechase saddles carry slightly more weight for the additional security needed over obstacles.

Exercise and Work Saddles

Exercise saddles are used for daily trackwork — galloping, breezing, and schooling racehorses in training. They're heavier and more robust than race-day saddles, built to withstand daily use on multiple horses. A good exercise saddle has a secure seat, durable construction, and enough padding to protect the horse's back during fast work. Trainers typically have several exercise saddles in rotation, so durability and value for money are key priorities.

Race Tack and Accessories

Beyond saddles, racing requires specific tack: lightweight girths, racing breastplates, weight cloths (for carrying lead when the jockey is under the minimum weight), number cloths, and specialised stirrup irons. Our racing collection covers the full range of track equipment.

Durability in Track Conditions

Racing yards are tough on equipment. Horses are ridden early in the morning in dew-wet conditions, they sweat heavily during fast work, and tack is cleaned and reused daily. Materials need to withstand this cycle without deteriorating. Synthetic materials and treated leathers are preferred for their resilience. Our leather care products help maintain any leather racing equipment under these demanding conditions.
