Horse Boots and Bandages for Leg Protection

Your horse's legs are its most vulnerable asset. A single knock, over-reach, or brushing injury can sideline a horse for weeks. Horse boots and bandages provide targeted protection during exercise, competition, and travel — and Solo Saddlers stocks a comprehensive range to cover every scenario. With nearly 40 products in this collection, you'll find the right protection for your horse's legs regardless of discipline.

Types of Horse Boots

Brushing boots — The most commonly used boot, designed to protect the inside of the cannon bone and fetlock from strikes by the opposite leg. Essential for horses that move close behind or in front. Used for flatwork, hacking, and general exercise.

Tendon boots — Open-fronted boots that protect the tendons at the back of the leg while leaving the front open so the horse can feel a pole or rail. The go-to choice for showjumping, as they provide protection without dulling the horse's instinct to pick up its legs.

Over-reach boots — Bell-shaped boots that protect the heel bulbs and coronet band from over-reaching injuries (when the hind foot strikes the front heel). Particularly important for horses that forge, those working in deep footing, or during turnout.

Fetlock boots — Smaller boots that protect just the fetlock area of the hind legs. Often used in conjunction with tendon boots on the front legs for a complete competition setup.

Travel boots — Full-length boots that cover from above the knee or hock down to the coronet band. Essential for protecting legs during transport to shows, events, or new yards.

Exercise Bandages

Exercise bandages offer support and protection but require skill to apply correctly. Applied too tightly, they restrict circulation. Too loosely, they slip and become dangerous. If you use bandages, always use them over padding, wrap evenly, and check tension. Many riders now prefer boots for everyday use and reserve bandages for specific therapeutic applications.

Choosing the Right Protection

Think about what your horse actually needs protection from. A horse that brushes needs brushing boots. A jumper needs tendon boots in front and fetlock boots behind. An endurance horse needs lightweight, breathable boots that won't cause overheating on long rides. A horse being boxed to a show needs travel boots.

Material matters in South African conditions. Neoprene boots retain heat, which is fine for short sessions but can cause issues on longer rides. Mesh-backed and perforated boots allow airflow. Check out our endurance collection for boots specifically designed for distance riding.

Fit and Sizing

Boots should be snug without restricting movement or causing pressure points. Most come in pony, cob, and full sizes. Velcro closures should overlap fully and fasten from top to bottom (or outside to inside, depending on the design). Replace boots when the lining is compressed or the closures no longer hold securely.
