How a Straight Bar Snaffle Works

A straight bar is a single-piece, non-jointed mouthpiece that spreads pressure evenly across the tongue and bars. There is no nutcracker action, which makes it one of the mildest bit options available — especially well suited to horses being introduced to a bit for the first time.

The loose rings move with the mouth, encouraging the horse to mouth the bit and stay light in the hand rather than leaning or fixing.

Straight Bar vs Jointed — Which to Choose?

A straight bar applies even, predictable pressure and is the gentler option for first introductions to bitting or for horses that fuss with the joint action. A jointed Happy Mouth gives a softer breakaway feel and works better once the horse is reliably accepting contact. Many young horses graduate from straight bar to jointed in their first season.

Sizing & Fit

Measure your current bit from inside ring to inside ring. 125mm suits most ponies and finer-headed horses; 135mm suits most full-size horses. The mouthpiece should sit just past the corners of the mouth with a slight smile — no pinching, no excess width.

Care

Rinse with clean water after every ride and dry with a soft cloth. Inspect the rubber regularly — small nicks can pinch the tongue, so replace as soon as the surface roughens.
