Horse Reins for Reliable Contact

Reins are your direct line of communication to your horse's mouth, and the right pair makes a real difference to the quality of your contact. Whether you need the traditional feel of leather reins, the security of rubber grip reins in wet conditions, or the lightweight practicality of web reins for everyday riding, Solo Saddlers has you covered with options across all styles and disciplines.

Types of Reins We Stock

Plain leather reins — Classic and elegant, ideal for dressage and showing. They require regular conditioning to stay supple but develop a beautiful feel over time. Best suited to dry conditions or riders with a secure, educated hand.

Rubber grip reins — Leather reins with a rubber or continental web grip section. These are the go-to choice for showjumpers, eventers, and anyone who needs a secure grip when hands get sweaty or conditions are wet. Extremely popular and practical.

Web and cotton reins — Lightweight, washable, and affordable. Web reins are popular for everyday schooling, young horses, and riders who prefer a softer feel in the hand. They're also a good choice for children learning to ride.

Plaited reins — Plaited leather or kangaroo hide reins offer excellent grip through their texture. Popular in endurance, polo, and general riding. They're particularly good for riders who find plain leather too slippery.

Endurance reins — Often made from biothane or beta material, endurance reins are designed for long-distance riding. They're waterproof, easy to clean, and won't stretch or deteriorate from hours of sweat exposure.

Sizing and Attachment

Standard rein length is about 150cm, but this varies. Reins for ponies are shorter, and some riders prefer longer reins for flatwork. Check the buckle type too — hook stud, buckle, and billet attachments all connect differently to your bridle. Make sure your reins match the bit rings on your bit for a secure connection.

Matching Reins to Your Riding

Think about what your hands deal with. If you ride in the rain, in hot weather, or do fast work, rubber grip reins are your best bet. If you value feel and finesse, leather reins reward an educated hand. If you're trail riding for hours, biothane reins won't let you down. For schooling and lessons, washable web reins are practical and forgiving.

Care Tips

Leather reins need regular cleaning and conditioning — neglected leather becomes stiff and slippery, which defeats the purpose. Synthetic and web reins can be rinsed with water and hung to dry. Keep an eye on stitching at the bit attachment point; this is where reins fail first. Browse our leather care products to keep your leather reins in top condition.
