Horse Bridles for Every Riding Discipline

A horse bridle is one of the most important pieces of tack you'll buy. It's your primary means of communication with your horse — and when it fits well, both horse and rider perform better. Solo Saddlers stocks over 80 bridles covering snaffle bridles, double bridles, shaped and padded competition bridles, endurance bridles, and working bridles for everyday riding. Many are handcrafted in our South African workshop.

Types of Horse Bridle We Stock

Not every bridle suits every horse or discipline. Here's a quick breakdown of what you'll find:

Snaffle bridles — The most common type, used across all disciplines. A single bit ring on each side, compatible with a wide range of bits. Ideal for everyday schooling, hacking, and competition.

Double bridles — Used primarily in advanced dressage, these accommodate both a bradoon and a curb bit for refined aids. We stock complete sets and individual components.

Shaped and padded bridles — Anatomically designed to relieve pressure behind the ears and across the poll. These are increasingly popular in all disciplines as riders pay more attention to horse comfort.

Endurance and trail bridles — Built for long hours in the saddle. Lightweight, often with quick-release buckles and biothane or synthetic materials that handle sweat and water without deteriorating.

Working bridles — Simple, tough, and affordable. Perfect for yard horses, young horses in training, or as a spare.

Choosing the Right Bridle

Start with your horse's head shape. Cob, full, and oversize sizes are standard, but some horses fall between sizes — and that's where adjustable cheekpieces and nosebands matter. The bridle should sit comfortably without pinching the ears, pressing on the eyes, or interfering with the bit.

Consider your discipline. A showjumper might want a simple, lightweight bridle that doesn't distract. A dressage rider might want a padded, shaped bridle with a flash or crank noseband. An endurance rider needs something that won't rub after 80km.

Leather vs Synthetic

Leather bridles look smart, develop a lovely patina over time, and last for years with proper care (see our leather care products). Synthetic bridles — particularly biothane — are virtually maintenance-free, easy to clean, and ideal for endurance and trail riding where gear gets soaked in sweat and stream crossings.

Pair Your Bridle

A bridle is only half the equation. Browse our reins collection to find the right match — rubber grip, leather, plaited, or web reins depending on your preference and discipline.
