The bib martingale is similar to a running martingale, but it has a solid central piece between the straps of the running martingale. It helps keep the reins together and prevents the horse from trying to catch the straps in his mouth, which can lead to injury and panic.

What a bib martingale does

Because the reins are held closer together, it makes the potential leverage of the bit stronger, making it ideal for strong horses and enabling a lower head position.

A martingale prevents the horse from lifting his head too high and gives you a neck strap to hold onto if you are feeling insecure on top of your horse.
