Bitless Bridles Explained: Cross-Under, Sidepull, Hackamore and How to Choose

Spend enough time at a South African yard and you will meet one rider who swears by a bitless bridle and another convinced the whole idea is nonsense. Both usually argue from feel rather than from how the equipment works. A bitless bridle is not one thing. It is a family of designs that put pressure on completely different parts of the horse's head, and picking the wrong type is the most common reason riders try bitless once, decide it does not work, and go back to a bit.

What a Bitless Bridle Actually Does
Every bridle works by applying and releasing pressure. A snaffle does it inside the mouth, on the bars, tongue and corners of the lips. A bitless bridle moves that conversation to the outside of the head: the nose, the jaw, the cheeks and the poll, depending on the design. The horse still learns the same way, by finding the release when it responds.
That shift matters more than riders expect. The nose and jaw are far less sensitive than the bars of the mouth, so the signal is broader and slower. Some horses read it as calmer and clearer. Others find it vague and lean straight into it. Neither reaction is a fault in the horse, nor a verdict on bitless riding in general. It usually just means the design does not suit that horse. The Main Types of Bitless Bridle
If you only take one thing from this article, take this: the word "bitless" tells you almost nothing on its own. What matters is where the pressure lands.
Cross-Under, Often Sold as Crossover
This is the design most people picture when they hear "bitless bridle", and it is worth knowing that the same thing is sold under two names. The reins pass through rings on either side of the head, cross underneath the jaw, and run up the opposite cheek. A rein aid therefore squeezes gently around the whole head rather than pulling on one point: nose, jaw, cheek and poll all at once.
It suits horses that respond well to a soft, all-round cue, and it is a common starting point for riders leaving a snaffle for the first time. The trade-off is a slower release than a sidepull, because the straps have to slide back through the rings before the pressure fully lets go. Keep the leather supple and the rings clean, or that release becomes sticky. You will find cross-under designs in the bridles collection.
Sidepull and Crank Noseband
A sidepull is the simplest bitless design there is. The reins attach to rings at the sides of a noseband, so a left rein means direct pressure on the right side of the nose and nothing else. No leverage, no poll pressure, no crossing straps.
Because the cue is so literal, sidepulls and padded crank-noseband bitless bridles are excellent teaching tools for young horses, horses being restarted, and riders working on straightness. The catch is that a sidepull gives you very little help with a strong horse. If your horse already leans, a sidepull will tell you so within one schooling session.
Mechanical Hackamore
A mechanical hackamore has shanks, and shanks mean leverage. Pressure lands on the nose, the poll and the curb groove under the jaw, and it multiplies according to shank length. This is the one type in the category that genuinely deserves caution: a long-shank hackamore in unsteady hands can be considerably more severe than a plain snaffle.
Used properly, by a rider with an independent seat and quiet hands, a short-shank hackamore is legitimate and useful tack, particularly for endurance and trail riders whose horses need to eat and drink on the move. Bosal and Traditional Western Bitless
The bosal is the oldest design in the family: a stiff rawhide noseband ridden with a mecate rein, working through weight, balance and the shift of the heel knot rather than through pull. It is a genuine skill set rather than a quick swap, and worth learning properly if you ride western. Related tack sits in the bridles and reins range.
Bitless Attachments and Rope Bridles
There is also a simpler tier: bitless attachments that clip onto a headstall you already own, and rope or biothane bridles built for endurance and trail work. These are the cheapest way to find out whether your horse is interested in going bitless at all. Biothane in particular suits South African conditions, since it does not mind sweat, dust or a river crossing.
Bitless Is Not Automatically Kinder
This is the point the internet gets wrong most often. Removing the bit does not remove the pressure, it relocates it. A tight noseband can restrict breathing. A long-shank hackamore can bruise the delicate cartilage at the lower end of the nasal bone. Sustained poll pressure is uncomfortable regardless of the cause.
Kindness lives in the hands and in the fit, not in the hardware. A well-fitted snaffle ridden softly is kinder than a badly fitted bitless bridle ridden hard, every time. The British Horse Society's horse care and welfare guidance is a sensible reference point on welfare standards.
Fitting a Bitless Bridle Properly
Most bitless failures we hear about are fitting failures. Work through these:
- Noseband height. The noseband must sit at least four fingers' width above the nostrils, on solid bone. Any lower and it presses on cartilage and can interfere with breathing. This is the most important measurement on the bridle.
- Noseband tightness. Two fingers should fit comfortably between the noseband and the jaw. A bitless bridle does not need to be tight to work, and a tight one works worse.
- Cheekpieces. Even on both sides, with the throatlash loose enough for a hand's width at the gullet.
- Rein position. On a cross-under design, check the reins run cleanly through the rings and nothing catches when you take up a contact.
- Sizing. Bitless bridles are sized like conventional ones, generally pony, cob and full. Check the size options on the product page, and measure your horse rather than guessing from the last bridle you bought.

Is Your Horse a Good Candidate?
Bitless tends to help horses with dental problems, mouth or tongue injuries, a history of bit evasion, or genuine tension that traces back to the mouth. It also suits endurance and trail horses who need to graze and drink comfortably over long distances.
It suits horses less well if they are strong, green in a way that predates any bit issue, or if the rider's brakes were already marginal. If your horse pulls in a snaffle, a sidepull will not fix that. A bitless bridle changes the conversation, it does not change the training underneath it. Bitless in Competition
Do not assume you can compete in what you school in. Rules on bitless equipment vary between disciplines and governing bodies, and they change. Some permit it broadly, some permit specific designs only, and some do not allow it at all. Check your discipline's current rulebook with your federation before you enter, not the week before the show.
Care and South African Conditions
Leather bitless bridles carry more moving hardware than a plain snaffle bridle, so they need more attention. Rings, sliders and shank joints collect dust and sweat, and a stiff sliding strap ruins the release the design depends on.
On the highveld, dry heat and UV draw the oils out of leather faster than most owners expect. At the coast, humidity means mould. Either way, clean after heavy work and condition regularly with products from the leather care range, and check your reins and stitching at the same time, since that is where wear shows first. Trying Bitless, Sensibly
Start with a sidepull or cross-under design rather than a mechanical hackamore. Fit it carefully, ride in an arena, and give your horse three or four sessions before drawing conclusions. The first ride tells you very little.
