About the Pelham Plated Jointed Bit

A pelham bit provides the benefits of a double bridle — using snaffle action and curb action — without the need for two bits. This jointed pelham features a nutcracker mouthpiece that gives the rider more control, amplified by the leverage of the long shanks. Ideal for horses that need a step up from a standard snaffle.

Rein Options

A pelham can be used with a variety of rein setups depending on the level of control needed:

1. Two reins — one on the snaffle ring and one on the curb ring, giving the rider independent snaffle and curb action.
2. Rein connectors (roundings) — a connector attaches to both the snaffle and curb rings, allowing you to ride with a single rein while still getting a blended action.
3. Single rein — attached to either the snaffle ring or curb ring alone, depending on the desired action.

How It Works

The jointed mouthpiece creates a nutcracker action on the tongue and bars of the mouth when the reins are engaged. Combined with the leverage from the shanks and the curb chain under the chin groove, this bit offers more stopping power and refinement than a standard snaffle. A pelham must always be used with a curb chain to function correctly.
