Happy Mouth Jointed Fulmer Snaffle
A gentle, flexible snaffle designed for comfort and clear communication. This full cheek (fulmer) bit features a soft rubber mouthpiece with a single joint, encouraging relaxation and acceptance while reducing pressure on sensitive mouths.
How a Fulmer Snaffle Works
The full cheek design prevents the bit from sliding through the mouth and offers improved lateral guidance — perfect for training, young horses, or riders wanting more precise steering. A very good option for lunging horses in as well.
Ideal for young horses, sensitive types, or riders seeking a softer alternative to traditional metal mouthpieces.

Why a Soft Mouthpiece?
The flexible Happy Mouth-style mouthpiece is warmer and more forgiving than stainless steel — many horses accept it more readily, particularly those returning to work after a break or being introduced to bitting for the first time. The single joint creates a mild nutcracker action that asks for flexion without sharp pressure on the bars.
Suitable For
Horses that are mouth-sensitive, young horses being introduced to bitting, or horses that need extra steering support. Works well for flatwork, schooling and lunging in.
Introducing the Bit
If your horse is new to a fulmer, fit bit keepers to the cheek pieces of your bridle so the full cheeks stay upright in the mouth. Start with short sessions on the lunge before riding so the horse can settle into the action of the joint and the feel of the rubber.
Sizing Guidance
Measure your current bit from inside ring to inside ring. 125 mm (5") suits most ponies and smaller horses; 135 mm (5.5") suits most full-size horses. The bit should sit just past the corners of the mouth without pinching.
Common Questions
How long does the rubber mouthpiece last?
With normal use, the rubber holds up well for a year or more. Replace the bit if you spot deep tooth marks, splits or chewed edges — a damaged mouthpiece can pinch and is no longer safe.
Can my horse chew through the rubber?
Horses that habitually chew their bits may shorten the rubber's lifespan. If your horse chews persistently, address the root cause (dental check, anxiety, bit fit) rather than swapping to a harder material.
Is this bit dressage legal?
Plain rubber-covered jointed snaffles are permitted in most affiliated dressage tests, but always check current FEI and SANEF rules for the level you are competing at.
Care & Cleaning
Rinse the bit in clean water after every ride to remove saliva and food. Wipe dry with a soft cloth. Do not use harsh detergents on the rubber. Inspect the mouthpiece regularly for wear and replace if damaged.
