DESCRIPTION
The Pelham Plated High Port is a dual-action curb bit that combines snaffle and curb pressure in a single bit — a practical alternative to a full double bridle. Plated steel construction, an included curb chain, and a ported mouthpiece give experienced riders refined control over horses that pull or lean.
Key features
- Plated steel construction for durability
- High port mouthpiece — applies more pressure to the bars of the mouth
- Curb chain included
- Multiple rein configurations for graduated control
- Single-bit alternative to a double bridle
How a pelham bit works
A pelham provides the benefits of a double bridle — both snaffle and curb action — without the need for two bits. It is a well-established choice for horses that need a firmer aid than a snaffle but should not be rushed into a full weymouth and bradoon setup.
Rein options
- Two reins — an independent snaffle rein and curb rein, giving the rider the most precise aids.
- Rein connectors — a connector links the curb and snaffle rings so a single rein can apply balanced action.
- Single rein — attached at either the snaffle ring or the curb ring, depending on the action and amount of control needed.
About the high port mouthpiece
The ported mouth curves upwards, creating tongue clearance while concentrating pressure on the bars of the mouth. This makes the curb action significantly more severe than a mullen or jointed pelham, so it is best suited to experienced riders with an independent seat and soft hands. A pelham must always be used with a curb chain in place to function correctly.
