Tom Thumb Pelham Bit — Hard Rubber, 135mm
A versatile Pelham bit that delivers the benefits of a double bridle without two bits in the horse's mouth. The hard rubber Tom Thumb configuration is kinder to sensitive mouths and gives a lighter curb action than a standard long-shank Pelham.
How a Pelham Works
A Pelham combines snaffle action and curb action in one mouthpiece, ridden in one of three ways:
- Two reins — independent snaffle and curb control, the most refined option for an experienced rider.
- Pelham roundings (rein connectors) — clip both rings to a single rein for combined action, useful for jumping or hacking.
- One rein on a single ring — snaffle ring for milder days, curb ring when more control is needed.
A curb chain is required for the curb action to engage — fit it so it sits in the chin groove and tightens at roughly a 45° angle.
The Rubber Mouthpiece Advantage
The straight rubber mouthpiece spreads rein pressure across the tongue rather than pressing directly on the bars. That makes it a sensible choice for horses with sensitive mouths, horses that resist harder metal mouthpieces, or horses being introduced to a Pelham for the first time.
Why Tom Thumb Shanks
The Tom Thumb configuration uses shorter shanks than a standard Pelham. Less leverage means lighter curb action and less poll pressure — well suited to horses that respond to light contact, or that are stepping up from a snaffle for the first time.
