Loose Ring Hollow Mouth Snaffle Bit
The loose ring hollow mouth is the most commonly used snaffle bit in everyday riding. The hollow stainless-steel mouthpiece is thicker than a solid bit but considerably lighter, sitting comfortably across the bars of the horse's mouth without adding unnecessary weight to the rein contact.
Key features
- Stainless-steel construction — durable, rust-resistant, easy to clean
- Hollow mouthpiece — thicker profile with reduced weight for a softer feel
- Free-rotating loose rings — the rings shift with rein pressure, giving the rider more play and discouraging the horse from leaning
- Single jointed snaffle action — gentle nutcracker effect on the bars and tongue
- Available in 125 mm, 135 mm and 145 mm
Why riders choose a loose ring
Because the rings can rotate freely through the holes in the mouthpiece, the bit is constantly making small movements as the horse mouths it. This helps keep a young or fussy horse soft in the contact and prevents fixing or bracing against the rein. It is a popular choice for schooling, flatwork and general riding.
Fit and use
Measure the inside width of the bit ring-to-ring against your horse's mouth — there should be roughly 5 mm of mouthpiece visible on each side of the lips. Pair with a well-fitted bridle and check the corners of the mouth regularly for any rubbing from the loose rings.
