Happy Mouth Jointed Pelham Bit
A versatile pelham bit featuring a soft, jointed Happy Mouth style mouthpiece designed to encourage acceptance and comfort. Ideal for riders who need additional braking power without compromising on softness in the contact.
How a Pelham Bit Works
The pelham combines snaffle and curb action through its leverage cheeks and curb chain, allowing for refined communication. The gentle Happy Mouth mouthpiece helps promote relaxation and confidence in the contact, even when the curb engages. You can ride with two reins (snaffle and curb) for maximum control, or with roundings and a single rein for simplicity.

Two Reins or Roundings?
Two reins give the most refined control — use the snaffle rein for everyday riding and apply the curb only when needed. Roundings (leather couplings) join the snaffle and curb rings to a single rein, which is simpler for less experienced hands but loses some of the precision the pelham was designed for. Many riders start with roundings and progress to double reins as confidence builds.
Suitable For
Horses that need a touch more brake than a snaffle but still benefit from a softer mouthpiece. Popular for show jumping, hunting, polocrosse and stronger horses where you want refined control without harshness.
Sizing & Fit
Measure your current bit from inside ring to inside ring. 125 mm (5") suits most ponies and lighter horses; 135 mm (5.5") suits most full-size horses. Adjust the curb chain so it engages when the cheeks rotate to roughly 45° — too loose and the curb has no effect; too tight and it sits constantly on the chin groove.
Care
Rinse the mouthpiece with clean water after every ride and dry with a soft cloth. Check the rubber regularly — small nicks can pinch, so replace the bit once the surface roughens. Keep the curb chain clean and free of grit, and check the links and hooks for wear before each ride.
