Lugging Bit Steel

A lugging bit is a specialized racing bit designed to prevent a horse from "lugging," or leaning, to one side.

This type of bit, often called a ring bit, has a large, loose ring that encircles the lower jaw to provide better control and keep the horse running straight on the track.

They are especially useful for strong pullers or horses that tend to hang on the reins, as they help the jockey maintain steering and control. 

How it works

• Stops the "hang": The large, loose ring encircles the lower jaw, acting like a second bit to counteract the horse's tendency to pull to the inside or outside.
• Provides constant contact: The design ensures the bit stays in a consistent position in the horse's mouth, preventing it from sliding around and providing the rider with a more stable connection.
• Improves steering: The added lateral control from the ring helps the jockey steer the horse more effectively.
• Increases confidence: By providing more control, these bits can give the horse more confidence and help it perform better on the track. 

When it's used

• For horses that lug: The primary purpose is to correct a horse that pulls to one side, whether that's leaning in or "lugging out".
