DESCRIPTION
A softer, kinder version of the traditional curb chain. Steel curb chain wrapped in leather with inner padding reduces direct pressure on the horse's jaw and prevents the rubbing and pinching that a bare metal chain can cause on a sensitive mouth.
Why a Padded Curb Chain
Traditional steel curb chains work well but can bite into the chin groove, especially on horses with thin skin or sensitive jaws. This padded version keeps all the leverage benefits of the curb while softening the contact — useful for young horses learning to accept a curb, or for horses that have become sensitive through poor fitting in the past.
Key Features
- Steel curb chain core for proper leverage
- Wrapped in leather with inner cushioning padding
- Softens pressure on the chin groove and minimises rubbing
- Adjustable to set the desired curb action
- Available in black or brown leather
- Suitable for Weymouth, Pelham, Kimblewick and other curb bits
Fitting Your Curb Chain
The curb chain should engage when the bit is rotated roughly 45 degrees — loose enough to sit comfortably when the rein is relaxed, firm enough to activate the curb action under contact. Adjust the hooks to achieve this balance. Always twist the chain so each link lies flat against the chin groove before fastening — twisted links cause discomfort and uneven pressure.
Care
Wipe down with a damp cloth after rides and treat the leather wrap with a light leather balm every few weeks to keep it supple. Browse our leather care range for the products we recommend.
