DESCRIPTION
The Gag Snaffle is a lever-action bit that gives you extra stopping power and control when you need it most. Acting on the horse's lips and poll at the same time, it encourages a horse that leans on the bit to lift its head, making it a popular choice for strong pullers and horses in retraining.
How the Gag Snaffle Works
Gags are severe bits with a pulley and lever action. The pressure on the lips tends to make the horse raise its head, which is useful for a horse that tends to lean on the bit. The rope runners form the cheek pieces, and the reins attach to the rings at the end of the runners. The runners are removable and replaceable.
Where It Is Used
Gag bits are used mainly for horses that are strong pullers or that need retraining. They are most commonly seen in polo, eventing (especially cross-country), show jumping and hacking, where a rider needs increased control at moments when a horse may get excited or try to run off.
Rein Configurations
- One rein: your main rein is connected to the ring on the end of the runner.
- Two reins: your main rein is connected to the large bit ring, with a second rein on the ring at the end of the runner.
- Split or gag reins can also be used.
