- Flexible rubber front toe cage prevents the foot sliding through
- Shock absorbing stirrup base with a rubber grip for more stability
- Maintenance free, easy to clean
Why a Toe Cage Matters
The rubber toe cage stops the boot pushing through the stirrup in the event of a fall — a real risk on long trail rides where a stuck foot can quickly turn a dismount into a serious accident. The cage flexes enough for an easy in-and-out under normal riding, but holds the foot in place during the unexpected.
Suitable For
- Endurance and competitive trail riding
- Day rides, hacking and bush riding
- Riders who switch between boots, takkies and trail shoes
- Anyone wanting a safer alternative to a plain English iron
Fitting & Tread Width
A safe stirrup leaves roughly 1.5cm of clearance on either side of your riding boot — enough room to free the foot, but not so wide that it slips right through. The 12cm tread on these stirrups suits most adult trail boots and takkies. Measure the widest part of your sole and allow that small margin each side before choosing. The deep 10cm base also spreads pressure across the ball of the foot, which makes a real difference in comfort on rides of several hours.
Common Questions
Will these fit a standard endurance or trail saddle?
Yes. They take a conventional stirrup leather and fit any saddle with standard stirrup bars, including most endurance, trail and western saddles.
Does the toe cage need replacing over time?
The rubber cage is hard-wearing, but UV and grit will eventually stiffen it. Inspect it once a year and replace the stirrup if the rubber hardens, splits or loses its flex — a brittle cage no longer releases the foot reliably.
Care
Rinse off mud and grit after long rides; the aluminium will not rust, but keeping the rubber clean preserves grip. Inspect the toe cage rubber annually and replace the stirrup if the cage hardens or cracks.
