Felt Saddle Shims
Felt shims slot into a shimmable saddle pad or numnah to make fine adjustments to a saddle's fit. They fill voids, correct pressure points and create a more level, balanced fit — compensating for changes in the horse's body such as muscle development, ageing or changes in work level.
Common Uses for Felt Shims
- Balancing the saddle: level a saddle from front to back, preventing rocking or bridging
- Addressing asymmetry: compensate for uneven muscle development by adding a shim on the weaker side
- Lifting the front: useful for horses with high withers or downhill backs to prevent wither pressure and free up the shoulder
- Filling hollows: support a sway-backed horse for even weight distribution
- Adapting to seasonal change: adjust as the horse's shape changes through the year
Variants Available
- Front shim — lifts the pommel / front of the saddle
- Back shim — lifts the cantle / rear of the saddle
- 2-piece set — both front and back for full adjustment
Why Saddle Fit Matters
A poorly fitting saddle can cause discomfort, restrict movement and lead to long-term back problems. Felt shims offer a simple, cost-effective way to fine-tune fit between professional saddle fittings — they are not a replacement for a qualified saddle fitter, but a useful interim tool.
How to Position Shims
Place shims inside the pockets of your saddle pad or numnah, positioned where additional padding is needed. Always check fit with the horse standing square, and reassess regularly as your horse's condition changes.
