DESCRIPTION
A lugging bit is a specialised racing bit designed to prevent a horse from "lugging" - leaning to one side. Often called a ring bit, it has a large, loose ring that encircles the lower jaw to provide better control and keep the horse running straight on the track.
The rubber covering softens the action, making it well suited to strong pullers and horses that hang on the reins, helping the jockey maintain steering and control.
How it works
- Stops the "hang": the large, loose ring encircles the lower jaw, acting like a second bit to counteract the horse's tendency to pull to the inside or outside.
- Provides constant contact: the design keeps the bit in a consistent position in the mouth, preventing it from sliding around and giving the rider a more stable connection.
- Improves steering: the added lateral control from the ring helps the jockey steer more effectively.
- Builds confidence: with more control, the horse can settle and perform better on the track.
When to use a lugging bit
- For horses that lug: corrects a horse that pulls to one side, whether leaning in or lugging out.
- For strong pullers: ideal for powerful horses that lean heavily on the rider's hands.
- For training and racing: commonly used in both training and racing to help young or strong horses run straight.
