Riding Boots
Riding Boots for Safety and Comfort
Your riding boots are a safety item first and a fashion item second. A proper riding boot has a defined heel that prevents your foot from slipping through the stirrup, a smooth sole that releases cleanly in a fall, and enough support to keep your ankle stable in the saddle. Solo Saddlers stocks riding boots for men, women, and children across a range of styles, from practical yard boots to competition-grade long boots.
Types of Riding Boots
Jodhpur boots (paddock boots) — Ankle-height boots that are the most popular choice for everyday riding in South Africa. They're versatile enough for schooling, hacking, lessons, and yard work. Pair them with half chaps for extra leg grip and protection, and you've got a setup that rivals long boots for functionality at a fraction of the cost.
Long riding boots — Full-length boots that extend to just below the knee. Preferred for dressage, showing, and competition. They provide a clean leg line, consistent contact with the horse's side, and a polished appearance. Available in leather and synthetic options.
Half chaps — Worn over jodhpur boots, half chaps give you the leg coverage and grip of long boots with the convenience and affordability of short boots. They're available in leather, suede, and synthetic materials. A good pair of half chaps with quality jodhpur boots is the most practical combination for South African riders who do a bit of everything.
Yard boots — Waterproof, hardwearing boots for mucking out, turning horses out, and general yard work. You don't want to ruin your riding boots in a muddy paddock, and yard boots give your feet the protection they need during the unglamorous parts of horse ownership.
Fit and Sizing
Riding boots should be snug but not tight. Your toes should have room to move, your heel should sit firmly without lifting, and the boot should allow you to flex your ankle in the stirrup. For long boots, the top should sit just below the back of your knee and allow a slight bend. Too tall and they'll dig into your knee. Too short and they'll gap and look untidy.
Materials
Leather boots mould to your foot over time and look excellent, but they require care — regular cleaning and conditioning with products from our leather care range. Synthetic boots are lighter, more affordable, and easier to maintain, making them a practical choice for everyday riding and riders who don't want the upkeep commitment.
Riding Boot Safety
Never ride in trainers, sandals, farm boots, or anything without a defined heel. In a fall, your foot can slide through the stirrup and you'll be dragged. It happens, and it's entirely preventable with proper riding boots. This is one area where safety is non-negotiable. Pair your boots with a properly fitted helmet from our helmets collection and the right riding gear for complete rider safety.
