DESCRIPTION
A standing martingale is similar to a running martingale, but instead of having 2 straps with rings that attach to the reins, it has 1 strap that attaches to the back of the noseband.
It is used to prevent the horse throwing it's head around or lifting it's head too high, preventing the horse hitting the rider in the face when it is turned or stopped abruptly.
When the horse pulls upwards on a standing martingale, it applies pressure to the horse's sensitive nose area.
Mostly used for polo and polocrosse.
Made from strong South African leather with stainless steel buckles.

- Strong South African leather construction
- Stainless steel buckles for durability and corrosion resistance

- Suited to polo, polocrosse and general schooling
How a Standing Martingale Works
Unlike a running martingale, the standing martingale uses a single strap that runs from the girth, through a neck strap, up to the back of the noseband. When the horse raises its head beyond a working position, the strap applies steady pressure to the sensitive nose area — encouraging the horse to lower its head without affecting rein contact.
When to Use One
Standing martingales are most commonly seen in polo and polocrosse, where sharp turns and sudden stops can cause a horse to fling its head up. They're also useful for schooling young or excitable horses that habitually toss their heads.
Care and Maintenance
South African leather lasts longest when cleaned and conditioned regularly. See our leather care range for soaps, oils and conditioners suited to high-use tack. Always inspect the strap and buckles before riding, particularly at the noseband attachment point.
