South African summers bring peak midge and fly activity. A sheet with an integrated neck cover cuts down the biting-insect load your horse carries through the day, which helps with fly irritation, itching and allergic skin reactions, and it shades the coat against sun bleaching. Pair this sheet with a good topical fly repellent for layered protection.

On African Horse Sickness: AHS is spread by Culicoides midges, which at 1-4mm are small enough to pass through breathable mesh. A fly sheet reduces insect contact, but it does not prevent AHS. Annual vaccination is a legal requirement in South Africa, and stabling from late afternoon through to morning remains the practical control during the season.
