Leather Neck Bar Straps for Double Harness
Leather straps designed for double harness work, fitting over each horse's neck to carry the neck bar. The neck bar supports the weight of the disselboom (cart shaft), keeping the harness balanced and the load distributed correctly between two horses — essential for both recreational driving and working pairs.
How They Work
Each horse wears a neck strap; the neck bar sits across the top, connecting the pair. The disselboom sits in the neck bar, so the weight of the cart or wagon is carried evenly by both horses rather than pulling one horse down.
Key Features
- Made from quality leather — strong and long-lasting
- Buckle-fit design — secure and adjustable for different horse sizes
- Carries the weight of the neck bar and disselboom (cart shaft)
- Designed for use with a double harness (2 horses)
- Set includes straps for both horses
- Proudly handmade in South Africa
Ideal For
Recreational carriage driving, working pair harness for farm use, traditional Cape carts, and any two-horse driving setup where a neck bar is used to carry the disselboom.
Fitting & First Use
- Buckle the strap so it sits high on the neck, just behind the poll — not low against the shoulder
- Leave room for two flat fingers between the leather and the horse's neck when fully buckled
- On the first few outings, check the strap mid-drive — leather stretches slightly with use and you may need to take it up a hole
- Both horses should carry the bar evenly; if one horse is dipping, recheck the strap heights
- Oil with a quality leather conditioner before first use to soften, then every couple of months thereafter
